April 28th - On this day in history, Fascist leader and Italian dictator, Benito Mussolini was shot and killed by communist partisans along with his mistress and fifteen Fascist hencemen.
Mussolini had been trying to flee Italy to the safety of Switzerland dressed as a German officer when he was captured by communist partisans on April 27th 1945. They travelled throughout the evening and stopped at the small village of Mezzegra, where Mussolini and his mistress, Clara Petacci, spent their last night.
Following the shootings the next morning, the bodies of the executed Fascists were trucked to Milan where they were kicked, spat on and eventually strung up in the Piazza Loreto, a spot where murdered anti-fascists had been strung up before them.
